The Story, Part Two 2004-02-23

...and tied his shoe.

I was looking at the ducks trying to not pay attention to what he was doing. But he stayed down on one knee and said, “I’ve got a question for you.”

I looked at him then and said something similar to “Mrfpl?”

He pulled a box out of his coat pocket, opened it and said, “Will you marry me?”

As soon as I saw the box, I put my hand to my mouth and teared up. I nodded my head and said, “Yes.”

His tears joined mine and he stood up, saying, “I was a little bummed when you got sick this morning.” Then he tried to give me the whole ring box.

I waved him off and said, “No, you’re supposed to put it on me.”

He sniffed and shrugged. “I didn’t know. I’ve never done this before.” Then he took the ring out of the box and slipped it on my finger.

Oy vey, it’s BEAUTIFUL! So much lovelier than the original ring and better than I imagined it would be. I really love it. Even though I’d said it wasn’t important to me to have a ring and that is still true, I love it and wouldn’t trade it for anything.

A few more sweet nothings were said and kisses were shared. I was so happy and excited and overwhelmed that a few minutes later, I asked him, “I know you asked me to marry you and I know I said yes, but what else did we say?”

He said he didn’t remember either, so anything else was lost to the moment. But what a wonderful moment it was.

For the next four or five hours, I just giggled. Randomly, frequently, giddily. We went to a coffee shop immediately afterward and I giggled there. Then we went to a mall to find a CD I wanted to buy and I found myself giggling again.

I’m not a giggly girl. I love to laugh, but don’t giggle often. But he made me giggly. I loved it.

And I love him.
